Transport and Mixing in Laminar Flows - From Microfluidics to Oceanic Currents (Hardcover): Roman Grigoriev Transport and Mixing in Laminar Flows - From Microfluidics to Oceanic Currents (Hardcover)
Roman Grigoriev; Series edited by Heinz-Georg Schuster
R3,687 R2,943 Discovery Miles 29 430 Save R744 (20%) Out of stock

This book provides readers from academia and industry with an up-to-date overview of important advances in the field, dealing with such fundamental fluid mechanics problems as nonlinear transport phenomena and optimal control of mixing at the micro- and nanoscale.
The editors provide both in-depth knowledge of the topic as well as vast experience in guiding an expert team of authors. The review style articles offer a coherent view of the micromixing methods, resulting in a much-needed synopsis of the theoretical models needed to direct experimental research and establish engineering principles for future applications.
Since these processes are governed by nonlinear phenomena, this book will appeal to readers from both communities: fluid mechanics and nonlinear dynamics.

A distinctive discussion of the nonlinear dynamical phenomena of semiconductor lasers.
The book combines recent results of quantum dot laser modeling with mathematical details and an analytic understanding of nonlinear phenomena in semiconductor lasers and points out possible applications of lasers in cryptography and chaos control. This interdisciplinary approach makes it a unique and powerful source of knowledge for anyone intending to contribute to this field of research.
By presenting both experimental and theoretical results, the distinguished authors consider solitary lasers with nano-structured material, as well as integrated devices with complex feedback sections. In so doing, they address such topics as the bifurcation theory of systems with time delay, analysis of chaotic dynamics, and the modeling of quantum transport. They also address chaos-based cryptography as an example of the technical application of highly nonlinear laser systems.

A small informal symposium on "Molecular Genetics" was organized by us on behalf of the "Gesellschaft Deutscher Naturforscher und Arzte" and took place in Berlin in October 1967. There were about 40 partici pants from Europe and the United States. Molecular Genetics represents today an extraordinarily comprehensive research field. Therefore the organizers of the symposium had the choice either of limiting the meeting to a particular topic or of covering a wider selection of current problems. The latter alternative was chosen. The fields of research of the participants covered the broad range of scientific problems in which molecular genetics is nowadays involved: Genetic code; chemistry and biosynthesis of proteins; mutation, modification and reactivation of nucleic acids; biochemistry of regulation; comple mentation; structure; replication and function of viruses, etc. The meeting took place in the Hotel Schweizerhof where the partici pants were also accommodated. This permitted close contact between the participants outside of the official program and allowed informal discussions, which started during the meetings, to be continued after wards. Owing to the informal nature of these discussions, only a part of them could be included in this book. Berlin, September 1968 H. G. WITTMANN H. Nonequilibrium Statistical Physics of Small Systems - Fluctuation Relations and Beyond (Hardcover): Rainer Klages, Wolfram... Nonequilibrium Statistical Physics of Small Systems - Fluctuation Relations and Beyond (Hardcover)
Rainer Klages, Wolfram Just, Christopher Jarzynski; Series edited by Heinz-Georg Schuster

This book offers a comprehensive picture of nonequilibrium phenomena in nanoscale systems. Written by internationally recognized experts in the field, this book strikes a balance between theory and experiment, and includes in-depth introductions to nonequilibrium fluctuation relations, nonlinear dynamics and transport, single molecule experiments, and molecular diffusion in nanopores.
The authors explore the application of these concepts to nano- and biosystems by cross-linking key methods and ideas from nonequilibrium statistical physics, thermodynamics, stochastic theory, and dynamical systems. By providing an up-to-date survey of small systems physics, the text serves as both a valuable reference for experienced researchers and as an ideal starting point for graduate-level students entering this newly emerging research field.

Reviews of Nonlinear Dynamics and Complexity (Hardcover, Volume 3): Heinz-Georg Schuster Reviews of Nonlinear Dynamics and Complexity (Hardcover, Volume 3)
Heinz-Georg Schuster
R3,485 Discovery Miles 34 850 Out of stock

Written in a style that breaks the barriers between the disciplines, this monograph enables researchers from life science, physics, engineering, or chemistry to access the most recent results in a common language. The resulting review character of this project sets it apart from specialized journals, and allows each volume to respond quickly to new developments.
This third volume contains new topics ranging from chaotic computing, via random dice tossing and stochastic limit-cycle oscillators, to a number theoretic example of self-organized criticality, wave localization in complex networks and anomalous diffusion.
A first-class board of international scientists advises the editor, such that the carefully selected and invited contributions represent the latest and most relevant findings.

Since modeling multiscale phenomena in systems biology and neuroscience is a highly interdisciplinary task, the editor of the book invited experts in bio-engineering, chemistry, cardiology, neuroscience, computer science, and applied mathematics, to provide their perspectives. Each chapter is a window into the current state of the art in the areas of research discussed and the book is intended for advanced researchers interested in recent developments in these fields. While multiscale analysis is the major integrating theme of the book, its subtitle does not call for bridging the scales from genes to behavior, but rather stresses the unifying perspective offered by the concepts referred to in the title. It is believed that the interdisciplinary approach adopted here will be beneficial for all the above mentioned fields.
